Consultation on proposed changes to paragraph 5 of the University Charter
As part of the exercise to remove references to Court from
the Charter and Statutes, paragraph 5 of the Charter (which details the role of
the Chancellor) required amendment.
Amendments proposed at the July 2009 meeting of Council have
subsequently been revised and re-presented to Council below. The revised wording
is supported by the Chancellor, the Chair of Council and the
Vice-Chancellor. It is therefore
recommended that paragraph 5. of the Charter be amended as follows:
Existing version (approved July 2009)
“There shall be a Chancellor of the University who
shall be the Chief Officer of the University, shall confer Degrees and shall
serve as a member of the Council of the University.”
Proposed version:
“There
shall be a Chancellor of the University who shall be the Chief Ambassador
of the University, shall preside over ceremonial functions and shall
serve as a member of the Council of the University.”
The amendment must be supported by a ¾ majority of Council
members and must be confirmed at a subsequent meeting of Council. Amendments will then be submitted to the
Privy Council for approval and as such will be subject to any changes that they
may make.
